Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update

Chancellor Girod is hosting weekly Zoom updates to discuss how KU is managing the pandemic and progressing through the fall semester.

The discussions will be pre-recorded and shared with campus each week -- usually on Wednesday -- via email and on this page. Each update will be approximately 15 minutes and feature at least one guest presenter.

Members of the community are encouraged to send questions to kuchancellor@ku.edu and provost@ku.edu.

 

Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 26 - Wednesday, December 2

In this week's episode, Chancellor Girod visits with Dale Seuferling, president of the KU Endowment Association, and Heath Peterson, president and CEO of the KU Alumni Association, to discuss how their organizations have adapted to the pandemic to continue supporting the university's mission. Specific topics include: new ways of engaging with donors, alumni and supporters; the "One Day. One KU" annual day of giving; and the Jayhawk Career Network.

 

Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 25 - Tuesday, November 24

In this week's episode, Chancellor Girod is joined by Mike Rounds and Callie Long from KU Operations to discuss campus operations during the long winter break. Specific topics include building access, security and signage; classroom and common area configuration and cleaning; PPE access; medical-grade air filtration; and new touchless technology. Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 24 - Wednesday, November 18

In this week’s episode, Chancellor Girod and Provost Bichelmeyer are joined by Andrew Foster, emergency management coordinator for KU, and Dr. David Wild, vice president for performance improvement at The University of Kansas Health System, to discuss the regional surge in COVID-19 cases and what it means for KU. Specific topics include: record-setting caseloads and hospitalizations in the Midwest; a look back on KU's fall semester COVID-19 response; exit testing options for students as they leave campus for winter break; concerns for the region heading into the holidays; and a look ahead at spring semester plans for KU.

 

 

 

Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 23 - Wednesday, November 11

In this week’s episode, Chancellor Girod is joined by four guests to discuss how KU is serving students both inside and outside the classroom and creating the best-possible campus experience during the pandemic. Guests include Jason Krone from Recreation Services, JJ O’Toole Curran from the Memorial Union, Sarah Waters from Student Housing, and Paige Freeman from the Office of First-Year Experience.

 

 

 

Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 22 - Friday, November 6

In this week's episode, Chancellor Girod visits with Vice Chancellor for Research Simon Atkinson, as well as Associate Vice Chancellors for Research Belinda Sturm and Kathleen Lynne Lane, to discuss efforts to keep the university’s research enterprise moving forward during the pandemic. Additionally, Professor Sturm discusses her research to detect COVID-19 in the wastewater systems of communities across the state, while Professor Lane discusses her work in school districts to develop resources to meet students’ academic, behavioral and social-emotional needs and make these resources available to the entire school community, including parents teaching at home.

Episode summary: In this week's episode, Chancellor Girod and Provost Bichelmeyer look ahead to the spring semester, with a focus on student enrollment, COVID-19 testing, course adaptations, and the on-campus experience. The Chancellor and Provost also share updates on the Bioscience and Technology Business Center’s expansion and our efforts with Kansas lawmakers to renew the state’s University Engineering Initiative Act.

Episode summary: In this week's episode, Chancellor Girod visits with Jamie Shew, county clerk and county election officer, and Logan Stenseng, the Student Senate's government relations director, to discuss voting in the upcoming election. Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 16 - Wednesday, September 23

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod visits with Jeff Long, director of Kansas Athletics, to discuss how the pandemic has impacted Kansas Athletics, college athletics and our individual student-athletes. The two leaders discuss topics such as student-athlete eligibility, KU's record-high student-athlete GPA, fiscal year economic challenges, the logistics of bringing student athletes back to campus earlier this summer, changes to scheduling and gameday experience for fall semester athletics events, and the NCAA's decision to cancel fall sports championships.

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod visits with three deans -- Paige Fields, Ron Ragan, and Rick Ginsberg -- to discuss planning, successes and challenges in their respective schools.

 

 

 

Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 13 - Wednesday, September 2

Episode summary: The Chancellor and Provost are joined by Dr. Pavika Saripalli, chief of staff for Watkins Health Services, to answer questions related to testing protocols and practices. Topics include: the difference between quarantine and self-isolation; testing of presumed close contacts of positive cases; the difference between symptomatic and asymptomatic cases; and nasal swab tests versus saliva tests. Additionally, the Chancellor provides an update on health and safety measures related to Kansas Athletics events for the month of September.

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod and Provost Bichelmeyer discuss the university's new mask policy, mandatory testing for staff and students, and the Big 12 Conference's plans for football this fall. Additionally, they discuss the recently announced Task Force on Community Policing and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Council.

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod and Provost Bichelmeyer are joined by Mike Rounds, vice provost for operations, to discuss KU's efforts to reopen campus and prioritize health and safety across the university community. Mike discusses a range of topics, including personal protective equipment, testing and contact tracing, enhanced sanitation, reconfiguration of spaces to de-densify campus, mask wearing, and a commitment to personal responsibility.

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod and Provost Bichelmeyer discuss ongoing fiscal recovery plans, including the recently announced temporary salary savings plan for employees making more than $50,000 per year and the principles underpinning that plan. The Chancellor and Provost also discuss an AAU survey of student preferences for fall 2020, as well as updates on state and federal funding and how they impact our projected $120 million shortfall for the upcoming fiscal year.

COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund

KU Endowment has establshed a COVID-19 Emergency Relief fund to enable Jayhawks to help other Jayhawks in need.
