Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update

Chancellor Girod is hosting weekly Zoom updates to discuss how KU is managing the pandemic and progressing through the fall semester.

The discussions will be pre-recorded and shared with campus each Wednesday via email and on this page. Each update will be approximately 15 minutes and feature at least one guest presenter.

Members of the community are encouraged to send questions to kuchancellor@ku.edu and provost@ku.edu.

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod visits with Chris Wilson and David Wild from The University of Kansas Health System to discuss KU's recently released COVID-19 dashboard and other data-sharing tools.

 

 

 

Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 14 - Wednesday, Sept 9

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod visits with three deans -- Paige Fields, Ron Ragan, and Rick Ginsberg -- to discuss planning, successes and challenges in their respective schools.

 

 

 

Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 13 - Wednesday, Sept 2

Episode summary: The Chancellor and Provost are joined by Dr. Pavika Saripalli, chief of staff for Watkins Health Services, to answer questions related to testing protocols and practices. Topics include: the difference between quarantine and self-isolation; testing of presumed close contacts of positive cases; the difference between symptomatic and asymptomatic cases; and nasal swab tests versus saliva tests. Additionally, the Chancellor provides an update on health and safety measures related to Kansas Athletics events for the month of September.

Episode summary: The Chancellor and Provost are joined by Susan Klusmeier, vice provost for academic success, and Tammara Durham, vice provost for student affairs, to discuss academic success, Hawk Week and additional topics related to the student experience.

 

 

 

Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 11 - Wednesday, August 19

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod and Provost Bichelmeyer discuss the university's new mask policy, mandatory testing for staff and students, and the Big 12 Conference's plans for football this fall. Additionally, they discuss the recently announced Task Force on Community Policing and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Council.

 

 

 

Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 10 - Wednesday, August 12

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod and Provost Bichelmeyer are joined by Mike Rounds, vice provost for operations, to discuss KU's efforts to reopen campus and prioritize health and safety across the university community. Mike discusses a range of topics, including personal protective equipment, testing and contact tracing, enhanced sanitation, reconfiguration of spaces to de-densify campus, mask wearing, and a commitment to personal responsibility.

Episode summary: Provost Bichelmeyer is joined by Chris Brown, vice provost for faculty development, and Dea Greenhoot, director of the Center for Teaching Excellence, to discuss KU's efforts to provide high-quality learning opportunities this fall in hybrid, face-to-face and remote settings.

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod and Provost Bichelmeyer are joined by Simon Atkinson, vice chancellor for research, to discuss the university's Research and Discovery design team and, more generally, efforts to enhance KU's research enterprise.

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod and Provost Bichelmeyer are joined by Mary Walsh, chief information officer, and Chris Gregory, senior director of strategic alignment & marketing, to discuss the Jayhawk Cloud.

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod and Provost Bichelmeyer discuss masks, testing and contact tracing, plans for students to quarantine or self-isolate, and local hospital capacity.

 

 

 

Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 5 - Wednesday, July 8

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod and Provost Bichelmeyer discuss the Protect KU plan and describe the role of the Pandemic Medical Advisory Team. Additionally, the two leaders discuss possible scenarios for the fall semester, as well as recent state and county orders regarding masks.

 

 

 

Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 4 - Wednesday, July 1

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod and Provost Bichelmeyer are joined by Vice Provost for Operations Mike Rounds and KU Emergency Management Coordinator Andrew Foster to discuss the Protect KU plan -- which will serve as our roadmap for a thoughtful, science-based return to campus -- as well as two new planning teams to help inform decision-making in the weeks ahead.

 

 

 

Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 3 - Wednesday, June 24

Episode summary: Chancellor Girod and Provost Bichelmeyer discuss ongoing fiscal recovery plans, including the recently announced temporary salary savings plan for employees making more than $50,000 per year and the principles underpinning that plan. The Chancellor and Provost also discuss an AAU survey of student preferences for fall 2020, as well as updates on state and federal funding and how they impact our projected $120 million shortfall for the upcoming fiscal year.
