Chancellor’s Weekly COVID-19 Update

Chancellor Girod is hosting weekly Zoom updates to discuss how KU is managing the pandemic and progressing through the semester.

The discussions will be pre-recorded and shared with campus each week -- usually on Wednesday -- via email and on this page. Most updates will feature at least one guest presenter.

Chancellor's Weekly COVID-19 Update - Episode 49 - Wednesday, June 9

In this week’s episode, Chancellor Girod discusses the university’s work to return to a full on-campus experience this fall. Specific topics include: admissions, recruitment and orientation; a turning point and shift in responsibility in pandemic response; and policy changes regarding masks, events and campus density. Additionally, Chancellor Girod provides an update on the state budget, which includes a 2.5 percent cut to KU’s general use budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

In this week’s episode, Provost Bichelmeyer visits with Vice Chancellor for Research Simon Atkinson to discuss the latest happenings in research at KU. Specific topics include the University Research Awards celebration; new internal funding opportunities such as the KU Racial Equity Research, Scholarship & Creative Activity Fund and Research Rising; ongoing improvements to research award management; and how research is embedded in the Jayhawks Rising strategic plan.

Additionally, the Provost and Vice Chancellor discuss KU’s five core strategic research initiatives: human potential across the lifespan; drug discovery, development and formulation; systems and environments; security and safety; and humanity in the digital age.

In this week’s episode, Chancellor Girod visits with Travis Goff, director of athletics, to discuss his first few weeks with Kansas Athletics and the department’s future. In this week's episode, Chancellor Girod discusses the Jayhawk Welcome Center, a 30,000 square-foot facility that will serve as the new starting point for all campus visits by prospective students and their families. Faculty, staff and students who still need a vaccine may seek out appointments to receive the Pfizer vaccine through Douglas County. COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund

KU Endowment has establshed a COVID-19 Emergency Relief fund to enable Jayhawks to help other Jayhawks in need.
